Hosting Thanksgiving? Keep Your Indoor Air Fresh and Your Home Comfortable
Phil's Heating and Air
For better indoor air during Thanksgiving, use a kitchen hood that exhausts outdoors, reduce unnecessary smoke and fragrances, and keep HVAC airflow clear. A suitable air filter can help capture particles, but it does not replace ventilation. Start with the cooking area instead of trying to solve every comfort problem at the thermostat.
A full oven, a crowded dining room, and a guest bedroom that suddenly gets used can change how your home feels. Here is a practical hosting plan for families in Gray, Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol, and nearby East Tennessee communities.
Start with the kitchen
Use the range hood before the room gets smoky
If your range hood vents outside, turn it on whenever you cook. The EPA's cooking and indoor-air guidance recommends leaving it running for 10–20 minutes afterward and using rear burners when practical. Clean the grease filter according to its instructions before the holiday rush.
A hood that recirculates air into the kitchen is different from one that exhausts outdoors. If you are unsure which you have, check its documentation or ask a professional. Do not assume that the sound of a fan means cooking pollutants are leaving the house.
Plan around outdoor conditions
When weather, outdoor air quality, and security allow, brief ventilation through windows or doors can supplement other measures. If smoke or poor outdoor air quality makes that unsuitable, keep windows closed and discuss appropriate filtration and mechanical ventilation options.
Give the HVAC system room to work
Before moving the dining table or setting up extra chairs, find the supply registers and return grilles. Leave them clear of tablecloths, luggage, folding beds, and furniture. Walk through the guest rooms too: a register hidden behind a suitcase is easy to miss.
Inspect the system's filter using the manufacturer's directions. Replace a dirty filter with the specified size and a compatible type. A more restrictive filter is not automatically a better choice for your equipment. If you are considering a filtration upgrade, ask Phil's to check compatibility and airflow first.
For everyday filter care after the holiday, see our article on why changing your HVAC filter matters.
Separate fresh air from recirculated air
Many central residential systems mainly circulate air already inside the home unless they include a separate outdoor-air provision. Turning the fan on can move air through a compatible filter, but it should not be treated as an outdoor-air ventilation switch.
The EPA's guide to home air cleaners treats filtration as a supplement to reducing pollutant sources and ventilating. Filters do not remove every pollutant. A room air cleaner also needs to be appropriately sized; it cannot solve an entire house's ventilation needs just because it sits near the kitchen.
Make a simple hosting-day plan
- Before guests arrive: clear airflow paths, check the filter, and confirm guest-room comfort.
- During meal preparation: use the outdoor-venting hood and avoid adding unnecessary smoke from candles or incense.
- As the house fills: make modest comfort adjustments instead of repeatedly switching modes or making large thermostat changes.
- After the meal: finish kitchen ventilation and return any temporary thermostat override to its normal schedule.
If the kitchen is warm but bedrooms remain cold, write down which rooms are affected. That pattern is more useful during a service visit than simply reporting that the whole house is uncomfortable.
Thanksgiving HVAC and air-quality FAQs
Will a new air filter remove cooking odors?
A standard particle filter is not designed to remove all gases or odors. Control emissions at the cooking area and use appropriate ventilation; ask about a specific filtration product's capabilities before relying on it.
Should I install the highest-MERV filter I can find?
Use the highest efficiency your system can accommodate without compromising airflow. The EPA recommends MERV 13 or the highest compatible rating for this purpose; compatibility depends on the equipment and filter setup.
Should I call before the holiday if one room is already uncomfortable?
Yes. A recurring issue is worth evaluating before guests arrive. Tell the technician when it happens and whether it affects one room or the whole home.
