Mountain Air, Modern Care: Your East TN HVAC Guide

April 22, 2025

THE TENNESSEE HVAC GUIDE

East Tennessee is known for its breathtaking mountain views, vibrant seasons, and... wildly unpredictable weather. From icy mornings in the Smokies to scorching afternoons in Bristol, TN your HVAC system works hard to keep your home comfortable year-round. That’s why understanding the unique climate challenges of our region—and how to handle them—is key to getting the most out of your heating and cooling system.

Why East Tennessee Homes Need Smart HVAC Solutions

Living in East TN means dealing with high humidity in the summer, surprise cold snaps in the winter, and pollen-packed springs. According to the National Weather Service, Knoxville experiences an average of 47 inches of rain annually and over 100 days per year with high humidity levels above 70%. That kind of climate puts serious strain on HVAC units! What does that mean for homeowners?

  1. More frequent system usage
  2. Increased wear and tear
  3. Higher utility bills if systems aren't running efficiently
  4. Greater risk of mold, mildew, and allergens inside your home

The Power of Preventative Maintenance

The best way to avoid costly repairs or complete system breakdowns is through regular preventative maintenance. According to Energy Star, properly maintaining your HVAC system can improve its efficiency by up to 15%, extend its lifespan, and improve indoor air quality.

Phil’s Heating and Air offers comprehensive seasonal checkups that include:

  • Inspecting and replacing air filters
  • Cleaning coils and blower components
  • Checking refrigerant levels
  • Calibrating thermostats
  • Ensuring safe electrical connections

All of this helps your system perform better when it matters most—whether you're warming up your mountain cabin in January or cooling down your Appalachian Ranch house in July.

When It's Time for a New HVAC System

Older HVAC systems (typically 10–15 years old) are often less efficient and more expensive to operate. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that upgrading to an Amana Energy-Efficient HVAC System can save homeowners up to 20% annually on heating and cooling costs. Even better, our team of experts can guide you through the available Energy Efficiency Rebates, saving you up to $2,800 on your HVAC Replacement System.

If you have a heat pump, you might be aware that you should avoid using the emergency heat setting on your thermostat. You might have been warned not to use this setting because it uses electric heat strips to heat your home, which are not nearly as energy efficient as your heat pump’s normal function. Because heat pumps work by pulling heat from the air outside your home, the colder that air is, the more difficult it is for your heat pump to operate this way…
